Two recent studies based on data from the national NICE registry, linked with Statistics Netherlands (CBS), investigated socioeconomic differences among patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. We found that Intensive Care Unit patients with a lower socioeconomic status had a 1.6 times higher odds of dying in the hospital compared with patients with an average socioeconomic status. This difference remained after adjusting for factors including age, sex, illness severity and comorbidities. We also found clear regional and hospital-level differences in the socioeconomic composition of Intensive Care Unit populations. Important findings of this research found their way to NRC and Telegraaf as well as on live radio NPO1 (in Dutch).
